Ms. Zeenat Hisam is a writer and researcher associated with Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research (PILER), Karachi, since 2003. Prior to joining the development sector, MsHisam worked with Daily Dawn from 1980 to 1991. She has written extensively for the media on social issues and authored several research reports, especially on labour issues. Her published works also include two books and a collection of translation, of fiction of several international literary luminaries. She wrote a weekly column (Diary of a Feminist) on women’s issues in daily Star, English-language evening newspaper (1981-82) for two years and edited the bi-monthly wall newspaper on environment and sustainable development “HamaraMahol” for Shirkat Gah (1993-94). She has a Master’s degree in Development Studies specializing in Women and Development from the Institute of Social Studies, the Hague, the Netherlands (1987-88). She also holds a Master’s degree in Psychology from the University of Karachi.

Ayesha Khan is a Director at the Collective for Social Science Research in Karachi. Her work focusses on women, policy issues, health, poverty, and development. Ms. Khan holds a Masters degree in South Asian Studies from School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), UK. She has been part of the Collective as a Senior Researcher since 2001 covering a range of issues, in particular gender and development, social policy and conflict/refugee issues in the region. She has extensive experience in qualitative research design. Ayesha worked as a journalist in international radio, local television, newspapers and magazines from 1990-96. More recently, she researched the effects of paid work on women’s empowerment in Pakistan as part of a multi-country UK government-funded study on Pathways to Women’s Empowerment, and led a study on induced abortions in Pakistan. She has also worked on mapping and assessment of child protection services and policies in the country.

vMs. Farida Shaheed has worked for more than 25 years, promoting and protecting cultural rights by fostering policies and projects designed in culturally sensitive ways to support the rights of marginalized sectors, including women, peasants, and religious and ethnic minorities. She is the recipient of several national and international human rights awards. Her writings, with a special focus on the interface of culture, gender, religion and the state, have been published extensively. She received the Prime Minister’s award for her co-authored book Two Steps Forward One Step Back? Women of Pakistan. She also received the International Award UCLG – MEXICO City – Culture 21 Award in recognition of her untiring work as a researcher and rights activist. Ms. Shaheed has also been appointed as the UN Special Rapporteur in the field of Cultural Rights.

Ms Gulnar Tabassum is a feminist human rights activist and a filmmaker. She has directed several nationally and internationally lauded documentary films that have been used as advocacy tools to highlight the rights of women and minorities. These films have also chronicled the struggles and the triumphs of the marginalized women and minorities of Pakistan. As Director Leadership and Communications, she has trained hundreds of women to claim their civil and constitutional rights, become self-sufficient and unite to hold fast against oppression, whether it is in domestic or social settings.

Over the years, Sarah has authored and co-authored various researches and papers on the issue of sexual & gender-based violence, structural and substantive discrimination against women and institutional violence against women.
